IRIS3D Research Objectives
We invite applications from all academic fields. The independent research group leader is expected to develop and carry out a research program that contributes to reflection on the societal impacts of intelligent systems related to the theme of the project. Examples include, but are not limited to the following topics:
- Intelligent systems as empirical tools for the analysis/understanding of diversity, demographics, or democracy (3D)
- Intelligent systems as the core of applications supporting societal objectives related to diversity, demographics, or democracy (3D)
- Issues related to the use of intelligent systems in the 3D domains, e.g., bias and diversity, need to account for demographic trends, challenges for AI-supported democracy
Disciplinary scientific approaches may range, for example, from the engineering of corresponding intelligent systems, the observation, and analysis of these matters by intelligent systems, or the questioning of social, philosophical, or historical conditions and effects of intelligent systems regarding these matters.
IRIS3D will be embedded in the Cyber Valley ecosystem and the interdisciplinary Stuttgart Research Focus Interchange Forum for Reflecting on Intelligent Systems (IRIS). IRIS provides a platform to stimulate critical reflection on the foundations, mechanisms, implications, and effects of intelligent systems in research, teaching, and society. The University of Stuttgart is one of Germany’s leading technically oriented universities. It promotes the transfer of knowledge and technologies to society in a wide range of profile and competence areas and emerging fields.
What we offer
The Independent Research Group Leader position offers an exceptional opportunity to conduct societally relevant research, sharpen their profile, and start their research group within IRIS. The Research Group Leader will be independent to pursue their research agenda but will be expected to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with IRIS members (e.g., through joint events, workshops, etc.). Additionally, the successful candidate will be provided mentorship and support by two experienced professors.
The IRIS3D Research Group will be funded until the end of December 2026, including the Group Leader position (TV-L E14, 100%) as well as funds for a Ph.D. position (TV-L E13, 100%), student assistants, team assistance, and substantial annual budgets. Furthermore, the Research Group Leader will benefit from the support structures offered by the Graduate Academy of the University of Stuttgart (GRADUS) and IRIS.
