Research assistant/ PhD student (m/f/d) -focus mobile app development-
How can we tailor learning situations to the learners in the best possible way and help them to achieve their educational goals in the long term? In the newly created Department of Teaching and learning with intelligent systems at the Institute of Educational Science at the University of Stuttgart, we combine educational theories with psychological methods and algorithms from artificial intelligence to answer this question. Our resulting intelligent educational technologies can adapt to the learners and their contexts and thus provide them with optimal support.
We are currently looking for scientific support and therefore offer a position as
Research assistant/ PhD student (m/f/d)
to the extent of 100% limited to 36 months. The remuneration will be in accordance with E13 TV-L (if the formal requirements are fulfilled).
The position
The position focuses on the development of a mobile app to promote environmental awareness in the school context. In this app, students interact with the virtual character of a wild bee and complete various mini games. Machine learning algorithms will be used to ensure the adaptive functionality of the app and the included features (e.g., knowledge units, reflection prompts, point-based levels and badges). Additionally, a simple web interface should be developed to assist supervising teachers in administrating the mini games in the app. The envisioned research will be conducted in collaboration with the Chemnitz University of Technology (Prof. Dr. Günter Daniel Rey).
The position further entails teaching duties (about one course per semester) and the co-supervision of bachelor, master and project theses.
We highly encourage and support to conduct a doctoral thesis within the project.

In addition, solid experiences in the development of mobile apps in iOS and/or Android, web development and the application of machine learning methods are required.
Furthermore, knowledge in user-centered software development, the willingness for interdisciplinary cooperation and participation in the PR activities of the department are desirable. First experiences in teaching, game-based learning and instructional design (or the willingness to acquire related knowledge) are an additional plus.
Solid English language skills are required for international cooperation and the preparation of publications.
What we offer
We offer the opportunity to participate in the development of intelligent educational technologies that support learners in various ways in a creative, dynamic, interdisciplinary team. The regional connection with the CyberValley, Europe's largest AI cluster, provides the opportunity to work with top scientists from all over the world and to use a rich infrastructure of events and educational opportunities.
In addition to subject-related qualifications, we facilitate the personal development of our team members in various ways, e.g., by participating in national and international conferences, summer schools and career-related workshops, joint publications, participation in scientific networks or regular mentoring.
