Principles for a better dialogue between science and society

At Cyber Valley, we are committed to fostering open, meaningful exchange between AI research and society. To strengthen this dialogue, we initiated and co-developed Germany’s first public engagement codex together with the Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science, published in 2022.

The codex provides a shared framework for how research institutions, scientists, and practitioners can design high-quality public engagement. It defines guiding principles, values, and quality standards that move beyond traditional science communication toward genuine two-way dialogue, transparency, and mutual learning.

By establishing a common understanding of public engagement, the codex helps embed responsible engagement practices into research culture, particularly in fast-evolving fields such as artificial intelligence, where societal reflection and ethical considerations are essential.

The initiative continues to evolve

An expanded version of the codex will be published in 2026 as a dedicated chapter in the edited handbook “Praxishandbuch Partizipation in der Wissenschaft – Methode, Modus oder Mindset” by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH.

This contribution further situates the codex within the broader academic discourse on participation and engagement in research.
