Brave Conversations Stuttgart 2024 takes place within the context of a world undergoing significant social, political, and technological change:

      • 2024 is the year which seems the most number of human beings participating in ‘democratic’ elections, something that has been described as an ‘election extravaganza’. Read more.
      • Technology companies are releasing more and more powerful Large Language Models and Machine Learning systems and Intelligent Agents. Read more.
      • They are also rapidly developing and releasing new ways of interacting with technologies such as Augmented Reality. Read more.
      • Social Media companies are under increasing scrutiny by governments and regulatory authorities around online safety. Read more.
      • Progress on human longevity is becoming increasingly interesting with progress being made on the Science of Ageing. Read more.
      • It is hoped that renewable energy sources will achieve one-third of global power generation in 2024. Read more.

Within all of these themes perhaps the most important is not the technological advances, but what the implications are for humans and the human systems within which we live. This is what Brave Conversations seeks to explore. We can’t go down every rabbit hole but we can peek into a few and see if we can draw out themes that impact each of us in our daily lives, to explore how we can retain our humanity and our agency in the Age of Smart Machines.

    We will be exploring

      • What is the definition of a human in the Age of the Smart Machine?
      • What is the role of a human in this Age of the Smart Machine?
      • How do we retain our humanity whilst harnessing the power of Smart Machines to improve life for all on Planet Earth?

  • ELLIS Doctoral Symposium 2024

    ELLIS Doctoral Symposium 2024

    What is ELLIS?

The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) is a pan-European AI network of excellence which focuses on fundamental science, technical innovation and societal impact. Founded in 2018, ELLIS builds upon machine learning as the driver for modern AI and aims to secure Europe’s sovereignty in this competitive field by creating a multi-centric AI research laboratory. ELLIS has established 41 units in 16 different countries in Europe. It has also launched the ELLIS PhD Program, one of Europe’s most competitive PhD programs which aims to foster and educate the best talent in machine learning and related research areas by pairing outstanding students with leading academic and industrial researchers across Europe. The ELLIS PhD Program has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon research and innovation programme under ELIAS Grant Agreement No. 101120237 (2023-2027) and from the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under ELISE Grant Agreement No. 951847 (2020–2024).

    What is EDS2024?

The ELLIS Doctoral Symposium is an annual conference for ELLIS PhD students and other PhD students to meet in person and share knowledge about machine learning. The ELLIS Doctoral Symposium 2024 (EDS2024) is the fourth edition, which is co-organised by the University of Tübingen and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, and will be held in Paris, France. It is expected to host 150 attendees during one week from Monday, August 26 to Friday, August 30.

The focus of this year’s symposium is AI & Sustainability.

Participants are expected to prepare a poster or a tooling session with a strong machine-learning component. The topic of the poster or tooling session is completely open, as the ELLIS Programs bring together researchers from multiple disciplines within the machine learning community (Computer Vision, NLP, Theoretical ML, Reinforcement Learning, Human-Centric ML, etc.). If upon registering you are unsure about the material you wish to present, do feel free to submit a tentative title. EDS2024 follows in the footsteps of the previous EDS iterations held in Helsinki (EDS2023), Alicante (EDS2022) and Tübingen (EDS2021). Save the date and join us for keynotes, poster & tooling sessions and social events in the beautiful City of Light!

Students requiring a short-stay visa for the event can apply here.

    Thursday, 13 June

    SOFTWEAR Days:

This year there is a satellite event to the EuroEAP 2024 conference: SOFTWEAR Days 2024. There will be an oral session also open to all EuroEAP participants, free of charge, on Thursday 13th of June in the afternoon at the same venue and room as the EuroEAP 2024. Oral presentations will be given by the SOFTWEAR PhD students presenting their research.

A few slots have also been reserved for presentations by other PhD students outside SOFTWEAR. The topic of the presentation must be in the broad category of soft actuators for wearables. If you, as a non-SOFTWEAR student, want to give an oral presentation (15 mins incl. questions), please contact edwin.jager@liu.se.

SOFTWEAR is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network in the emerging and rapidly growing field of wearables, with a unique focus on soft actuators for wearables and exoskeletons. The primary objective of SOFTWEAR is to train young researchers in the multidisciplinary science of soft actuators for integration in wearables and augmenting textiles. This will be achieved by merging chemistry, physics, mechanics, electronics, textile technology, design, human-technology interaction, and ethics in a truly interdisciplinary manner, while teaching essential skills in ethics, product development, IPR, and industrial realization, thus providing a unique added value to the careers of the researchers. For more information, see: https://softwear-dn.eu/

    EuroEAP Society Challenge:

During the EuroEAP 2024, we’ll be having a challenge with € 400 worth of prizes. It is an open competition where teams of talented researchers can showcase a project of their choice and compete with colleagues in academia and industry. The final aim of the Challenge is to captivate and inspire the imagination of experts and the public alike with the possibilities that soft smart materials and soft transducers empower. • European Sovereignty in the AI Era

European Sovereignty in the AI Era

The discussions will center around key questions regarding the current European regulatory framework concerning transparency, fairness, and accountability, as well as the establishment of a robust European data governance framework. Within this overarching theme, the focus will be on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on the efficiency of public institutions.

How can we ensure the ethical use of AI technologies within public institutions? How can governments guarantee transparency in AI decision-making processes and address and mitigate biases in AI algorithms used in public services? How are governments tackling the security challenges associated with AI applications in critical areas such as defense and national security? Furthermore, what initiatives are being undertaken to enhance the AI literacy and skills of public servants?

Finally, the aim is to address the role of investments and capital for start-ups and academic institutions in Europe to ensure sustained growth and competitiveness in the AI sector. Eager engagement in insightful conversations and collaborative exploration at this event is anticipated.
