Christina Elmer was the first participant in the “Journalist-in-Residence” program of the Cyber Valley research network in Tübingen, which took place as a pilot project from April to June 2021. During her residency, she explored how artificial intelligence (AI) is used in journalism and how it can be made understandable to the public.
Her research focused on the explainability of machine intelligence and “algorithmic literacy.” Elmer conducted a representative survey and analyzed what information people need to competently understand and critically evaluate learning systems in their everyday lives.
Following her stay at TU Dortmund, she assumed the W2 professorship in Digital Journalism and Data Journalism in the 2021–22 winter semester. Based on her experiences, the pilot program became an integral part of Cyber Valley’s public engagement strategy.
