Cyber Valley Start-up Network continues to grow

    What does Visual Abstract do?

The start-up uses texts of scientific publications and transforms them into clearer graphics with the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The start-up's goal is to make science accessible to everyone. On the one hand, the graphics support researchers and students in easily and quickly absorbing newly published research results. In this way, the start-up wants to stem the flood of information to which researchers are exposed. On the other hand, the public benefits when scientific results are presented in a visually clearer way and are more easily accessible to interested parties.

“Industry and researchers face the challenge of adequately communicating their often complex research findings,” says Saribek Karapetyan, CEO of Visual Abstract. “Our graphical abstracts are easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to memorize – and quickly available to customers thanks to our AI-powered automated production process.”

    Cyber Valley Start-up Network

The Mannheim-based startup is part of the Cyber Valley Start-up Network. “As an AI startup from #TheLänd, it is a must and an honor for us to be part of the ecosystem of Europe's largest AI research consortium,” says Karapetyan. Founded in November 2019, the Cyber Valley Start-up Network now has 43 members.

  • Using Deep Learning to make Better Models of the Brain

Using Deep Learning to make Better Models of the Brain

The brain of Drosophila, which is one of the best known model organisms in biology, is interesting to both neuroscientists and computer scientists for several reasons. “Fruit flies only have tiny brains in comparison to mammals,” explains Macke, “Nevertheless, these animals have astonishing capabilities, such as highly precise control of their flight. They can use landmarks to orient themselves and respond rapidly when predators approach.” Despite its massive capacity, the brain of Drosophila only uses nanowatts of energy, making it far more energy-efficient than any computer.

In recent decades biological research has succeeded in analyzing the brain of the fruit fly at a high level of detail. “We now have access to the brain’s circuitry, but until now we haven’t been able to build any models that can solve tasks which are as challenging as those solved by real Drosophila brains.” Meanwhile, recent advances in Deep Learning have made it possible to create artificial neuronal networks that can carry out extremely complicated calculations. However, these artificial networks have become very different in architecture and functioning to biological ones.

“We want to bring these two worlds back together,” explains the AI researcher, “Our goal now is to create artificial neuronal networks that, in composition and structure, are similar to the brain of fruit flies, but at the same time can perform similarly complex computations.” This requires innovative machine learning methods, which will be developed and applied in the project, in close cooperation with Srinivas Turaga from the Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia, and other researchers. Such methods could also be used for neuroscientific research into animals with more complex brains, such as fish or mammals.

    About

Dr. Jakob Macke (born 1982) has been appointed to the professorship for Machine Learning in Science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Tübingen. This professorship was established in the Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning – New Perspectives for the Sciences” as of the summer semester 2020. • Brem among professors with strongest research record

Brem among professors with strongest research record

This places Brem in the top 0.5 percent of all business economists in German-Speaking countries across all disciplines, including management, finance, tax, production, marketing, human resources, and entrepreneurship. He is ranked 105th in the lifetime achievement ranking, up from 153rd in the last round.

The renowned “WirtschaftsWoche” ranking of business economists with the strongest research in German-speaking countries was published for the first time in 2020. The current edition covers research publications from 2018 up to and including 2022. The lifetime achievement ranking takes into account all articles ever published by a researcher. Articles published in selected, internationally established journals are regarded particularly highly in the evaluation. The category “authors” assessed a total of 3,638 people, while the lifetime achievement ranked more than 4,500 researchers.

The data used for the ranking is sourced from the bibliometric web portal Research Monitoring, which is operated by the KOF SWISS Economic Institute at ETH Zurich. Publications in almost 860 business administration journals were taken into account, weighted according to their reputation.

In addition to being well-placed in the “WirtschaftsWoche” ranking, Prof. Brem was also delighted to be placed among the top 1% in the latest Stanford/Elsevier ranking, which ranks him among the most frequently cited scientists worldwide in the field of “Business & Management”. Furthermore, this ranking also lists 120 other members of the University of Stuttgart from various departments.

  • Cyber Valley expands start-up and investor networks

Cyber Valley expands start-up and investor networks

“The continued growth of our networks underscores the attractiveness and importance that characterizes Cyber Valley as a European AI hotspot,” says Rebecca C. Reisch, Managing Director of Cyber Valley GmbH. “Increasingly, this relates not only to artificial intelligence research, but also to the concrete application of modern AI technologies – including in the areas of health and climate protection, as the latest additions impressively demonstrate.”

BrainKey quantifies brain health and align patients with the right treatment. For that, multimodal data fusion is used on biomedical data such as genetic and imaging data in order to assess brain health and provide treatment recommendations. “We created BrainKey to create a powerful new tool that can fundamentally improve how we identify, treat, and manage brain health. It’s a personal mission for me but it’s a global problem”, says BrainKey founder Owen Philips, who resides in Tübingen.

The Stuttgart-based company Concular enables building owners and manufacturers to efficiently reduce emissions, resources and waste and comply with regulations. With digital passports and tools, all stakeholders are capable to identify, trace, measure and circulate material flows. “We are excited to be part of the Cyber Valley Start-up Network to digitally and sustainably transform the construction industry jointly with technology”, says Dominik Campanella, co-founder and CEO of Concular.

TREEO’s vision is to reverse climate change with smallholder farmers to succeed in harmony with nature. The start-up from Stuttgart wants to empower farmers to monetize their carbon removals. By doing that, the farmers improve their livelihoods and fully capitalize upon their carbon equity, recognizing them as valuable asset holders. “We are excited to infuse the latest AI competence and build an expert network for the young TREEO start-up, an offspring from Fairventures, with the help of Cyber Valley”, says Stefan Ferber, Executive Director and co-founder of TREEO. “Ultimately, this will boost our teams in software development and carbon data analytics, building the bridge between climate technology and real climate action.”

The investor Plug and Play Tech Center operates from more than 35 locations worldwide investing in future-thinking companies such as PayPal, Danger, Dropbox, and Lending Club. “We want to support the local AI start-up ecosystem by helping them to connect to leading industrial corporations through our innovation platform comprising a network out of more than 600 world’s largest corporations and by funding these innovative start-ups”, says Tim Solle, Plug and Play Tech Center analyst.
