  • Building and Habitats object Model

    Building and Habitats object Model

  • AI & medicine: safe systems and their certification

AI & medicine: safe systems and their certification

“We want not only to improve the fundamentals of machine learning, but also to establish guidelines for certification of such AI systems, thereby enabling safe use in medicine,” says the project’s spokesperson, Professor Matthias Hein. “The AI research environment in Tübingen offers ideal conditions for this, as the expertise required for this is available here in a unique breadth in Germany. We are very pleased and grateful for the trust of the Carl Zeiss Foundation. This funding decisively advances research at the interface of AI and medicine at the University of Tübingen in structural terms.”

Project partners are the Departments of Radiology and Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Tübingen (UKT). TÜV SÜD and TÜV AI.LAB will be involved as cooperation partners in the development of certification protocols. In addition, three medical start-ups are supporting the project with data and concrete use cases: the two Tübingen-based companies AIRAmed and eye2you, both members of the Cyber Valley Start-up Network, and the Berlin-based company Vara, which is developing AI systems to detect breast cancer.

Since the founding of Cyber Valley at the end of 2016, the Stuttgart/Tübingen region has developed into a dynamic AI research ecosystem, with newly established professorships, research groups, industrial research labs, doctoral programs and Germany’s first international master’s degree program in machine learning – also thanks to the establishment of the BMBF Center of Excellence for Machine Learning (Tübingen AI Center) and the Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science”, as well as the strong commitment of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS). Consequently, researchers from all these institutions are involved in the project “Certification and Foundations of Safe Machine Learning Systems in Healthcare”. In addition, there are other scientists from the Institute of Ophthalmology, the Center for Quantitative Biology, the Department of Computer Science, the UKT, as well as from the working group “Ethics and Philosophy in Artificial Intelligence” of the Cluster of Excellence.

    About the Carl Zeiss Foundation:

The Carl Zeiss Foundation’s mission is to create an open environment for scientific breakthroughs. As a partner of excellence in science, it supports basic research as well as applied sciences in the STEM subject areas (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Founded in 1889 by the physicist and mathematician Ernst Abbe, the Carl Zeiss Foundation is one of the oldest and biggest private science funding institutions in Germany. It is the sole owner of Carl Zeiss AG and SCHOTT AG. Its projects are financed from the dividend distributions of the two foundation companies.

  • Four new AI companies

    Four new AI companies

“The rapid growth of our start-up network to 29 member companies in less than two years is a testament to the region's expanding commercial impact in the field of intelligent systems – and also to the appeal of the Cyber Valley ecosystem”, said Michael J. Black, Cyber Valley spokesperson and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen. “With the recent addition of BAUTA, DeepCare, Quantum Gaming, and sereact, our community of entrepreneurs has gotten even stronger.”

BAUTA provides AI-based sensor systems for the anonymous collection of personal and frequency data. The company’s specially developed blind sensors only perceive the information, but not the identity of the persons. In so doing, BAUTA provides data with complete respect for privacy.

DeepCare has developed its first product “ISA”, a digital health coach for people who work at office desks. The aim is to make deskwork a healthier and happier experience by preventing side effects that derive from wrong sitting habits or low movements, such as musculoskeletal disorders. “ISA” evaluates the user’s upper body by creating a precise 3D model of it through a depth sensor. The device, which does not feature a camera and is not connected to the internet, then analyses the user’s body posture, as well as the user’s movement behavior, over time to provide individual guidance for a healthier behavior via its screen. This analysis relies on a novel deep learning algorithm.

Quantum Gaming is a spin-off of the University of Tübingen that develops AI agents for the computer gaming sector and its own computer games. With the help of insights from cognitive science, Quantum Gaming wants to raise the level of interaction between humans and game characters. Their first product, “Marbles AI”, will demonstrate how AI characters can learn from the user, contributing to a more dynamic gaming experience.

sereact is a spin-off of the University of Stuttgart that aims to bring a new era of intelligent robots to commercial viability. By providing AI-powered control software that enables robots to sense, reason and act, sereact empowers machines to understand, learn, and adapt. The product, “capto”, provides customers with the opportunity to close automation gaps and reach a new level of cost efficiency by using AI-driven robots in their supply-chains.

Cyber Valley regularly hosts networking events such as talks, meet-ups, and tech workshops. The next event of the Cyber Valley Entrepreneurship series is scheduled for October 21 and will feature high-profile speakers on the topic of “start-up support and funding”. More information about the event and how to attend can be found here.

  • BinDoc and Field 33 join start-up network

BinDoc and Field 33 join start-up network

“The Cyber Valley Start-up Network continues to grow and support the innovative AI companies”, says Michael J. Black, Director of the Perceiving Systems department at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and Cyber Valley speaker. “We are delighted to welcome BinDoc and Field 33 to the elite community of entrepreneurs that will reshape the economy of Baden-Württemberg.”

BinDoc is a start-up from Tübingen, that analyzes high-dimensional data from the healthcare sector with AI algorithms to create more transparency for hospitals and their stakeholders and drive progress in the industry. “Our AI-powered analytics software supports hospitals in the areas of market analytics, hospital processes and clinical outcomes optimization”, says BinDoc CEO Manuel Heurich. “A particular focus here is on predictive as well as retrospective analysis of clinical and economic outcomes and risk analysis. We support medical technology and life science companies with a real-world evidence platform that enables AI-supported big data analyses for clinical studies.”

The Stuttgart-based start-up Field 33 creates multi-dimensional maps of organizations based on pre-rendered information and knowledge that are populated with specific data over time for true data driven management. The maps provide transparency on what drives value in an organization and allow for simulation and prediction of strategies and tactical cross-domain initiatives and market changes. “The complexity of the digital economy is pushing people and organizations to their cognitive and economic limits. We need methods and technologies that enable a real leap in productivity also for established companies, and this is precisely where we come in with Field 33”, says Sebastian Wohlrapp, founder and CEO of Field 33. “Being part of the Cyber Valley Start-up Network brings us even closer to the leading edge of research in artificial intelligence that we benefit from and help to apply in the industry.”

Cyber Valley regularly hosts networking events such as talks, meet-ups and tech workshops. The next event of the Cyber Valley Entrepreneurship series is scheduled for September 16 and will feature high-profile speakers on the topic of “AI and Gaming”. More information about the event and how to attend can be found at cyber-valley.de/events/ai-gaming.
